Metzineres is a non-profit cooperative located in the Raval neighborhood, Barcelona, that creates Safe Spaces for women and non-binary people who use drugs and survive multiple situations of violence and vulnerability. These individuals are often unable to access standard care networks and are excluded from specialized services in areas such as drugs, mental health, homelessness, or gender-based violence.
Faced with this reality, Metzineres was born in 2018 with an innovative approach that integrates the full spectrum of harm reduction, intersectional feminism, and peer support. Since 2020, our Raval Space has hosted the SIE Raval (Specialized Intervention Service for gender-based violence), a service of the Care Network of the Department of Equality and Feminism of the Generalitat. Recently, we have opened Casa Marianne, the Rights Space, and this year we will inaugurate L’Arravalera.
Metzineres is recognized as a good practice at local, national, and international levels. This success is possible thanks to an interdisciplinary team that includes community technicians, social workers, educators, psychologists, nurses, lawyers, anthropologists, programmers, accountants, among others. We encourage the participation of women and gender-diverse individuals in the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the Safe Spaces, creating a cohesive, participatory, and responsible working group where camaraderie, solidarity, and mutual support prevail.
If you seek tranquility and harmony, this is not the place for you. But, if you want to maximize your learning and creativity while fighting against stigma and the structural causes of exclusion and social injustice, this is the opportunity to grow together. At Metzineres, we embrace an organic, heterogeneous, and complex way of working, but increasingly balanced and with the transformative passion that defines us.
